Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today made it clear that the issue of establishment of a bench of Orissa High Court in Western Odisha is under consideration and the BJP government in Odisha is committed to provide speedy justice to the people.
The CM has issued this clarification in the House today after his statement that there was no justification regarding HC bench in any part of the state triggered reactions from different political parties and organisations spearheading the agitation demanding a permanent High Court bench in Western Odisha.
BJD MLA from Bolangir, Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo, who had raised the issue through an unstarred question in the Assembly, today requested the Chief Minister to come up with a definite time-frame for setting up the High Court bench.
“Today, the Chief Minister has clarified that the matter is under consideration, but for how long. He should give an assurance on the floor of the House on whether a circuit bench or a permanent bench of the HC will be set up in Balangir and also mention the time frame,” Kalikesh said.
The Supreme Court had given its opinion that through technology, lawyers can put forth their views. But it was not a replacement for a second bench or circuit bench, he said.
The senior BJD lawmaker further said, “During our time, the State Government had tried for it. Now there is a double engine Government, they should try it as there is a good opportunity now. Bolangir has the first right for a permanent bench as there was a bench there.”
On the other hand, BJP legislator Laxman Bag said, “The CM said that the matter is under consideration and we are hopeful that there would be some positive outcome. We are waiting for it. The Opposition’s work is to mislead and politicise such a sensitive issue.”
