Centre Mulling Dreamliners Safety Probe

New Delhi: The Union Government of India is indeed mulling a safety probe into Dreamliners (Boeing 787s) following the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.

Fatal Crash: On June 12, 2025, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (Flight 171) crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 241 of the 242 passengers and crew onboard, and also causing casualties on the ground. This is reportedly the first deadly crash involving a Boeing 787 in its 16 years of operation.

Investigation Launched: India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has initiated a formal investigation into the disaster, in line with international protocols.

High-Level Committee: The Union Government is constituting a high-level committee of experts from various disciplines to examine the incident and devise ways to strengthen aviation safety measures and prevent future occurrences.

Potential Grounding: The Ministry of Civil Aviation is considering grounding all Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft operated by Indian carriers, pending initial safety assessments. Air India, which operates 34 Dreamliners, could face scrutiny over its maintenance records.

US Assistance: The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Boeing, and General Electric are all sending experts to India to assist with the investigation.
