CEA Clears Upper Indravati PSP

Bhubaneswar: Vishal Kumar Dev, Principal Secretary Energy and CMD Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC) is happy with the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), a key body under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has granted its concurrence to the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Upper Indravati Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Odisha.

This approval marks a significant step forward in boosting Odisha’s power infrastructure and enhancing the nation’s energy storage capacity.

Upper Indravati Pumped Storage Project has capacity of 600 MW, located in Kalahandi district and it will be developed by Odisha Hydro Power Corporation (OHPC)

The Upper Indravati PSP is a crucial project for Odisha, and will contribute to grid stability. The project involves the construction of two reservoirs at different elevations. During off-peak hours, excess electricity will be used to pump water to the upper reservoir. During peak demand, this water will be released to generate electricity.

The CEA’s approval of this project is part of a broader push to promote the development of Pumped Storage Projects in India. These projects are considered vital for integrating increasing amounts of renewable energy into the grid. The CEA has also been working to streamline the process for approving PSPs, which will help in faster project execution.

PSPs like Upper Indravati act as giant batteries, storing energy and releasing it when needed. This helps to balance the grid and manage the variability of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power.

By providing a reliable source of power during peak demand, the Upper Indravati PSP will enhance the stability and reliability of the electricity grid in Odisha and the region.

This project will support the integration of more renewable energy into India’s energy mix, contributing to the country’s clean energy goals.

The CEA’s concurrence to the Upper Indravati project underscores the Union Government’s commitment to developing energy storage solutions and modernizing the power sector.
