Bhubaneswar: In a major push to establish Odisha as a regional aviation hub, the State Cabinet has approved the establishment of a world-class Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar.
This will be the first major MRO facility in Eastern India and is a key milestone under the state’s B-MAAN (Building and Management of Aviation Assets and Network) scheme.
To attract private investment in this capital-intensive sector, the Cabinet has also approved a special package of additional incentives beyond the existing Industrial Policy Resolution (IPR) of 2022.
Air Works India (Engineering) Pvt. Ltd., India’s oldest and largest third-party MRO provider, has been selected as the anchor investor to establish and operate the facility.
The decision is backed by strong market projections, with a NITI Aayog report forecasting that India’s MRO industry will reach USD 4.0 billion by 2031. The new facility is expected to service the significant fleet expansion plans of domestic and international carriers, leveraging Odisha’s strategic geographical location near major air routes.
The Commerce & Transport Department will oversee the project’s implementation, while a High Power Committee on Aviation will facilitate its rollout and monitoring.
