Bhubaneswar: The Biju Patnaik National Steel Institute (BPNSI), operating under the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, today commenced a highly anticipated 2-day Professional Pre-Programme (3P) Knowledge Sharing Workshop. The workshop, specifically designed for working professionals from Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India Ltd. (AMNS) located in Paradeep, Odisha, aims to enhance their understanding of critical aspects within the steel industry.
The inaugural day witnessed enthusiastic participation from AMNS professionals who gathered at the BPNSI campus to delve into the intricacies of Mineral Processing, the evolving Energy Scenario, and the significance of BIS and HS Codes in their operations.
The workshop’s inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of key dignitaries. Mr. U.S.R. Raju, the Plant Head of Arcelor Mittal Nippon Steel India Ltd., delivered an inspiring inaugural address, emphasizing the importance of continuous learning and knowledge enhancement for professional growth and organizational excellence. Ms. Supriya Swain, the Deputy General Manager of Human Resources at AMNS, also shared her perspectives on the significance of such collaborative initiatives between industry and academia in fostering a skilled workforce. Their presence underscored the commitment of AMNS to invest in the development of their employees and leverage the expertise available at BPNSI.
The workshop kicked off with insightful sessions on Mineral Processing. Dr. Santanu Mandal, an esteemed Assistant Professor from IIT Bhubaneswar, shared his expertise on the latest advancements and best practices in mineral beneficiation and processing techniques. He elaborated on optimizing resource utilization and minimizing environmental impact in the mineral processing value chain. Complementing his insights, Ms. Shaswoti Mohanty, a dynamic Young Professional from BPNSI, provided practical perspectives and real-world applications of these concepts within the steel sector. Their joint session fostered a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental processes involved in preparing raw materials for steel production.

The afternoon session transitioned to the crucial topic of the Energy Scenario, Climate Change, and Decarbonization. Prof. Satyapriya Satapathy, a Senior Assistant Professor at BPNSI, led an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on the current global and national energy landscape. He highlighted the pressing challenges posed by climate change and underscored the urgent need for decarbonization within energy-intensive industries like steel. Prof. Satapathy explored various renewable energy sources, energy efficiency measures, and innovative technologies that can contribute to a sustainable future for the steel sector. The session encouraged participants to think critically about their organization’s role in mitigating environmental impact.
Tomorrow, the second day of the workshop will focus on BIS and HS Codes. Scientist Deepak Kumar Patra from the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) Regional Office in Bhubaneswar will provide a comprehensive overview of the relevant Indian standards and the Harmonized System (HS) codes used for classifying goods in international trade. This session is expected to equip the AMNS professionals with a better understanding of quality control measures, standardization processes, and the regulatory framework governing the steel industry.
