Book Launch Sparks To End Child Labor

Bhubaneswar: A book launch event for Dr. Sanjukta Maharana’s “Abolishing Child Labour and Pro-active Government Initiatives” served as a platform for prominent figures to advocate for the eradication of child labour and promote realistic literature as a tool for social change.

The event, held at the Odisha Labour Commissioner’s office, drew attention to the ongoing global issue of child labour, particularly in developing nations.

Shri Indramani Tripathi, Labour Commissioner of Odisha, joined the conversation, echoing the sentiment that abolishing child labour is a collective duty, not solely the government’s responsibility.

Shri Tripathy, a pro-people minded mandarin highlighted the need for proactive policies, strict enforcement, social awareness, and family empowerment.

Shri Tripathi stressed that every child has the right to an education and a childhood free from exploitation, and that ending child labour is essential for a more humane and just society.

In his statement at the book launch, Shri Tripathi is quoted as saying that the abolition of child labour is a “collective duty of society” and not just the government’s responsibility. He mentions that the government is taking many steps to eliminate the issue, but also emphasizes that “every child deserves the right to learn, play, and dream”.

His words express a deep concern for the well-being and rights of children, indicating a genuine “heart” for the cause.

The Labour Commissioner also highlights the importance of proactive policies, strict enforcement, social awareness, and empowering families, all of which are critical components of a comprehensive approach to combating child labour.

During the release of the book, acclaimed literary figure and social reformer Shri Dash Benhur emphasized the power of realistic literature, stating that it is more effective than fictional works.

He argued that literature focusing on real-world issues, like child labour, can “melt even the hardest of hearts” and guide people toward the right path.

He praised Dr. Maharana’s book as a prime example of such literature, noting its potential to influence policy and inspire action.

The book, described as “research-based and commendable” by former Joint Labour Commissioner Shri Pradeep Mohapatra, was reviewed by Shri Samarendra Bhutia. Shri Bhutia highlighted that the practical and realistic nature of the research could significantly improve existing labour policies.

Author Dr. Sanjukta Maharana shared her inspiration for the book, dedicating it to her parents and expressing gratitude to her professor, Dr. Ratnawali, for her guidance.

The event, moderated by Dr. Dwitichandra Sahu, was attended by several distinguished guests, including tribal researcher Dr. Paramanand Patel, Additional Secretary of Information and Public Relations Smt. Bishnupriya Sahu, and Executive Director of Odisha Mining Corporation Talat Affrin.

The book is expected to be a valuable resource for policymakers, social workers, and volunteers working in the fields of child labour prevention and child rights.
