BJD Wins 76 Urban Chiefs

Bhubaneswar: The Governing Biju Janata Dal (BJD) headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has made a landslide victory in the Urban Election, for which results were declared on Saturday.

The election for 109 ULBs was held on March 24. The results of 105 municipalities/notified area councils (NACs) and three municipal corporations of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Berhampur were declared by the State Election Commission (SEC). However, the counting of votes of Dhamnagar NAC was halted due to some reason, sources said.

The BJD has won chairperson seats in 73 municipalities and NACs and crucial mayor seats in all three municipal corporations—Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Berhampur.  BJP remained in second position by winning 16 chairperson seats, Congress in 7 and independent candidates in nine.

The regional party won the mayor seats in Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC). All three BJD mayoral candidates won the seats with a comfortable margin.

BJD candidate Sulochana Das won the election from the contesting BJP candidate Suniti Mund with a margin of 61,143 votes and became first woman mayor of the capital city. However, Congress candidate Madhusmita Acharya was able to get only 11,006 votes and remained in third position in the race.

Similarly, BJD’s mayor candidate for Cuttack, Subash Chandra Singh won the poll with a huge margin of over 45,206 votes from contesting Congress nominee Giribala Behera. In the millennium city, BJP candidate Sritam Das has remained in third position with 49,223 votes.

The BJD mayor nominee for BeMC, Sanghamitra Dalei too won the election with a margin of 20,286 votes from contesting BJP candidate Sabita Suar. In the Berhampur city, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate C Priyanka secured third position with 7,453 votes while Congress nominee Manju Rath remained in fourth position with 6,768 votes.

Thanking the people for re-imposing faith in his party, BJD President Naveen Patnaik, in a tweet, said, “Thank all the people of #Odisha for the overwhelming support in #OdishaMunicipalElection. The win is a reflection of the outpouring of love for @bjd_odisha and the untiring effort of thousands of party workers. #OdishaLovesBJD”
