Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Supremo Naveen Patnaik, fresh from his ninth consecutive term as party President, is engaged in crucial brainstorming sessions to restructure the party’s leadership. However, these deliberations are reportedly marred by internal conflicts, particularly concerning the pivotal post of organizational secretary.
Shri Patnaik convened a closed-door meeting at his residence, Naveen Niwas, with senior party leaders including Debi Prasad Mishra, Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak, Pratap Keshari Deb, Pranab Prakash Das, and Arun Sahoo. The primary agenda was the formation of a new State Executive Committee, but sources indicate that the meeting revealed deep-seated disagreements.
The central point of contention revolves around the position of Organizational Secretary, a role held by Pranab Prakash “Bobby” Das since its inception. Discussions focused on whether the post should be retained and, if so, who should fill it.
“There is some conflict within the top line leaders on the party’s Organizational Secretary,” an anonymous party insider revealed. “A detailed discussion was held whether the party would continue with the position or not. If the post will remain, then who will be appointed in the position? These are the questions raised during the meeting.”
Notably, several senior leaders are reportedly opposed to Bobby continuing in his current role. This internal friction marks a significant shift for the BJD, which has traditionally operated with a high degree of unity under Shri Patnaik’s leadership.
Arun Sahoo, speaking to the media after the meeting, attempted to downplay the reports of internal strife. “There is no internal conflict or rebellion within the party,” he asserted. “The decisions regarding the executive body will be taken in phases. Ultimately, Naveen Babu will decide who will hold which position in the party.”
However, the undercurrent of dissent is palpable. Sources suggest that the BJD’s recent electoral setbacks, following years of uninterrupted rule, have emboldened senior leaders to voice their concerns.
“Earlier, when the party was in power, no one was challenging the party leadership’s decision. But, now many senior leaders have started raising objections to the decisions,” a source explained.
The formation of the new State Executive Committee is now under intense scrutiny, as it will reveal the extent of Shri Patnaik’s ability to maintain control and navigate the growing internal challenges. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the future direction of the BJD and the resolution of the simmering power dynamics within the party.
