Bhutan King Visits MMLP Assam

Guwahati : His Majesty the King of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck paid a significant visit to the Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP) in Jogighopa, Assam this morning, April 19, 2025, marking a crucial step in strengthening regional trade ties.

The King was given a detailed briefing on the project’s progress through a comprehensive model display and presentation.

His Majesty expressed his appreciation for the advanced preparedness and strategic planning evident during his tour. The MMLP, developed by the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

NHIDCL is a fully owned company of the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India. The Infrastructure Behemoth promotes, surveys, establishes, designs, builds, operates, maintains and upgrades National Highways and Strategic Roads including interconnecting roads in parts of the country which share international boundaries with neighboring countries. 

This is a landmark project, being India’s first of its kind and the first MMLP in the North-East Region.

Spanning approximately 300 acres, the Jogighopa MMLP is designed to significantly enhance logistics efficiency and foster both domestic and international trade, with a particular focus on facilitating trade with Bhutan.

The project’s strategic location near Dhubri, a key entry and exit point in Assam for Bhutanese imports and exports via the river route, underscores its importance. The Jogighopa Inland Waterways Terminal is situated approximately 65 kilometers from Dhubri.

The MMLP boasts robust rail connectivity via the Jogighopa railway station and includes a modern Inland Water Terminal (IWT) as an integral component.

Phase-I Completion:

The first phase of the project has been successfully completed, encompassing essential infrastructure such as an Admin Building, Customs Office, Electric Sub-Station, Waste Treatment Plant, and Sewage Treatment Plant.

Phase-II Progress:

Phase-II, currently underway, aims to further expand the MMLP’s capabilities with the addition of a cargo rail terminal, container yards, a bonded area, warehousing facilities, paved roads, parking areas, and comprehensive utilities. The total estimated cost of the entire project is Rs.640.57 crore.

Inland Waterways Terminal (IWT):

The Inland Water Terminal, developed by NHIDCL in accordance with the requirements of the Inland Waterways Authority of India, is a vital part of the Jogighopa MMLP.

Before departing for Bhutan, His Majesty the King also visited the Inland Waterways Terminal (IWT), recognizing its critical role in enhancing regional connectivity and trade.

The visit highlighted the project’s potential to significantly boost economic cooperation between India and Bhutan, leveraging the strategic location and advanced infrastructure of the Jogighopa MMLP.
