Bell Metal Art Book Released

Bhubaneswar: The MGM Foundation, led by Chairman & Managing Director Pankaj Lochan Mohanty, in collaboration with the Bhubaneswar Experimental Art and Design Studio (BEADS), today announced the release of “Kansa: Forging Traditions, Shaping Futures,” a landmark publication dedicated to documenting and reviving Odisha’s bell metal craft.

Deputy Chief Minister Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo officially released the book at a special event this evening. The event, a gathering of artists, scholars, and art enthusiasts, highlighted the urgent need to safeguard this a fading art form. The book is the culmination of extensive fieldwork conducted by the Odisha Craft Odyssey (OCO) Fellowship Programme 2024-25.

Speaking at the launch, Shri Pankaj Lochan Mohanty emphasized the MGM Group’s commitment to cultural preservation. “Through the publication of this book, we have made a significant effort to revive and safeguard this dying art form, ensuring its rich heritage endures and inspires generations to come,” he said.

Shri Mohanty also shared a personal anecdote, urging people to reconsider exchanging damaged bell metal items for aluminum. “I always advise the people not to do so because once the craft becomes an antique piece, it will be a valuable item,” he stated.

“Kansa” documents the practices, techniques, and personal stories of artisans across 18 villages in Odisha, whose livelihoods and traditions are on the verge of extinction. The book, available in both English and Odia, represents five months of comprehensive field research.

Deputy Chief Minister Shri Singh Deo lauded the initiative, saying, “Through this book, the MGM Group has made sincere efforts to save the dying art and its legacy for future generations.”

Experts present at the event expressed hope that the publication would not only raise public awareness but also inspire policy support to keep these heritage arts alive.
