Balanga Burn Victim Dies

Bhubaneswar: A 16-year-old girl from Balanga, Odisha, who was battling for her life after being allegedly set on fire, has passed away at AIIMS, New Delhi, on Saturday, according to hospital officials.

The tragic death comes nearly two weeks after the brutal attack that had sparked nationwide outrage.

The victim had suffered over 75% burn injuries in the attack on July 19. She was initially admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar before being airlifted to AIIMS Delhi on July 20 for advanced and specialized treatment.

Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, including skin grafting, and remaining on ventilator support for several days, her condition remained critical.

In a surprising development following her death, Odisha Police released a statement claiming that their investigation has found no evidence of any other individual’s involvement in the incident.

This contradicts the victim’s mother’s FIR and initial reports from a local man who found her, which suggested she was attacked by multiple assailants.

The police statement, posted on a social media platform, requested the public to “maintain sensitivity” and avoid spreading unconfirmed claims while the case proceeds.

The incident and the girl’s subsequent death have triggered widespread grief and anger across Odisha. The victim’s plight had become a flashpoint for criticism against the government’s handling of women’s safety issues.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his deep shock and grief, stating that despite all efforts by the government and the dedicated medical team at AIIMS, her life could not be saved. He offered condolences to the family.

Former Chief Minister and BJD President Naveen Patnaik also conveyed his condolences.

Opposition leaders and various women’s organizations have condemned the police’s recent statement and are demanding swift justice.

Bhakta Charan Das, President of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee has called for the arrest of the culprits within seven days, threatening a protest at the DGP’s office if action is not taken.

Sanjay Dasburma, Vice President BJD has demanded Rs. 2 Crore compensation for the victim’s family.
