Bhubaneswar: Samajwadi Party (SP) President Akhilesh Yadav met with senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Srikant Jena in Odisha today, signaling potential political developments in the state. The meeting occurs at a time when the BJD is facing internal challenges.
While Shri Jena maintains that he remains within the Congress party, the discussions suggest that the SP is aiming to expand its influence in Odisha.
Both leaders emphasized their commitment to fighting for “Samajik Nyay” (social justice) and indicated their intention to continue their efforts in this direction. Sources suggest that Shri Jena could potentially become a key figure for the SP in Odisha, though no definitive decisions have been made yet.
Shri Jena advocated for unity among CPI, CPM, SP, and other INDI bloc constituents to advance the cause of social justice.
Akhilesh Yadav, when questioned about the meeting, stated, “We are committed to strengthening our presence in Odisha by engaging with more people on the ground.”
He further added that his visit to Odisha and meeting with Shri Jena was to pursue Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar’s vision of equality, respect, and inclusivity, and that the SP aims to expand its base in Odisha. “Our effort is that our message and thoughts reach out to the masses and hopeful people will join us,” he said.
The SP has been attempting to establish a foothold in Odisha for several years. The party previously appointed Rabi Behera as its state president for an extended period, but the desired progress was not achieved.
With the BJP, their main opponent in UP, now also in power in Odisha, the SP is reportedly seeking a new face for the party in the state. All eyes are now on Shri Jena’s next move.
