AI Shaping Aadhaar Vision’32

Bhubaneswar: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is making Artificial Intelligence (AI) a foundational technology in its ‘Aadhaar Vision 2032’ framework, a comprehensive roadmap designed to enhance and secure India’s digital identity platform for the next decade.

This strategic move is driven by the necessity to stay ahead of the rapidly changing technological and regulatory landscape. By focusing on AI, UIDAI aims to bolster the Aadhaar system across several critical dimensions:

AI and Machine Learning (ML) are being leveraged to significantly improve the security of Aadhaar’s core functions. The focus is on developing and deploying sophisticated algorithms capable of detecting and preventing fraudulent activities in real time. For instance, UIDAI already utilizes an in-house developed AI/ML-based system for the Finger Minutiae Record – Finger Image Record (FMR-FIR) modality.

This technology is crucial for distinguishing genuine fingerprints from cloned or spoofed ones during Aadhaar authentication, particularly in Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS) transactions. Furthermore, the AI-powered Face Authentication solution provides a robust, contactless alternative, protected against video replay and static photo spoofing attacks.

AI is set to redefine the user experience and drive greater inclusion. UIDAI is incorporating Generative AI (GenAI) solutions to offer advanced resident-centric services. This includes introducing AI-powered voice interactions and multilingual support across various Aadhaar services, initially deployed in multiple Indian languages. This use of AI will facilitate real-time feedback and address user queries more effectively, reducing the digital divide by making services accessible across India’s linguistic diversity.

The central importance of AI is reflected in the composition of the high-level Expert Committee, chaired by Shri Neelkanth Mishra, which is tasked with developing the Vision 2032 document. The committee includes prominent leaders from the AI domain, such as Shri Vivek Raghavan, Co-Founder of Sarvam AI.

The committee’s mandate is to provide strategic direction on how AI, along with other deep technologies like Blockchain and Quantum Computing, can be integrated to ensure the Aadhaar architecture is scalable, resilient, and aligned with the new Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. The Vision 2032 roadmap will effectively solidify AI as a key pillar for sustaining technological leadership and reinforcing Aadhaar’s role as a secure and inclusive digital identity for every resident.
