Bhubaneswar: With a recent uptick in COVID-19 cases, bringing the state’s tally to 49, the Odisha Health Department has issued a critical advisory, urging caution and considering restrictions for the upcoming Puri Rath Jatra, scheduled to commence on June 27.
The move comes as health officials eye potential public health risks associated with the massive congregation expected at the annual car festival.
Director of Health Services, Dr. Amarendra Nath Mohanty, has strongly advised individuals exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms to refrain from attending the Rath Jatra congregations. He emphasized that the elderly and those with co-morbidities should also avoid large gatherings to minimize their risk of exposure. All participants are urged to wear masks and strictly adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols, including frequent hand hygiene.
In preparation for any potential surge during the festival, steps are being taken to re-operationalize Intensive Care Units (ICUs) that were established during previous COVID-19 waves in Puri.
Additional beds are being arranged at the Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), and more medical staff will be deployed. The hospital is also being equipped with necessary medical supplies and infrastructure to manage any emergencies.
While the current active caseload stands at 34, and health experts note that most infections are mild and manageable at home, the state government is not taking any chances.
Director of Public Health, Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, stated that although the situation is under control, vigilance and preparedness are paramount.
Districts across Odisha have been directed to remain on high alert and ramp up COVID-19 surveillance and emergency response systems, ensuring the operational readiness of oxygen plants, availability of hospital beds, critical care units, and essential drug stocks.
The advisory also cautions against believing rumors and emphasizes relying solely on verified sources and official bulletins for accurate information. As preparations for the grand Rath Jatra continue, public health remains a top priority for the Odisha Government
