New Delhi: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi paid homage to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary, honoring the late leader as a visionary statesman who devoted his entire life to national service.
Reflecting on Vajpayee’s lasting legacy, the Prime Minister highlighted how his leadership, eloquence, and tireless efforts empowered the nation and inspired successive generations. He emphasized that Vajpayee’s unwavering commitment to good governance, public welfare, and national progress remains a guiding beacon for the country’s ongoing journey toward development and selfless service.
In addition to being honored as an extraordinary statesman, Atal Bihari Vajpayee holds a singular place in post-independence history as a poet-politician and the first non-Congress leader to serve a full five-year term as Prime Minister, from 1998 to 2004.
Across a parliamentary career spanning over five decades, he was elected to the Lok Sabha ten times and twice to the Rajya Sabha, earning respect across the political spectrum for his parliamentary eloquence and consensual leadership style. Co-founder and first national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980, he previously served as India’s External Affairs Minister in the Janata Party cabinet from 1977 to 1979.
His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by landmark economic and strategic developments. In May 1998, under Operation Shakti, his government conducted successful nuclear tests at Pokhran, establishing India as a nuclear weapons state while advocating a strict no-first-use doctrine. He demonstrated decisive national leadership during the 1999 Kargil conflict, even as he pursued diplomatic outreach with neighboring countries, including the historic Delhi-Lahore bus initiative.
On the domestic front, his administration laid the groundwork for modern connectivity and economic growth through landmark projects like the Golden Quadrilateral highway network, the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana for rural roads, and the expansion of the telecom sector. Conferring upon him the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 2015, the nation recognized his lifetime of service. His birth anniversary on December 25 is commemorated as Good Governance Day, continuing his legacy of public welfare and administrative dedication.
