Bhubaneswar: Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) has secured a landmark milestone in the national power generation landscape by achieving the “Number One” rank among all state-sector power generators across India in Plant Load Factor (PLF). This remarkable performance highlights the state utility’s operational rigor and relentless focus on energy efficiency.
Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Department of Energy and Chairman of OPGC, expressed high satisfaction with the stellar operational results. He noted that the benchmark achievement demonstrates the efficacy of strategic policy direction, process optimization, and sustained institutional support provided by the Energy Department to strengthen the state’s power ecosystem.
Beyond leading the state sector, OPGC has earned a spot among the Top 10 thermal power producers nationwide across both public and private sectors. In addition, the utility achieved an impressive 6th position among thermal power stations with a total generation capacity exceeding 1,000 MW.
Operating the flagship IB Thermal Power Station located at Banharpali in Jharsuguda district with a total installed capacity of 1,740 MW, OPGC has consistently delivered robust output to meet Odisha’s growing electricity demands. The station comprises two 210 MW units alongside two modern 660 MW supercritical units, serving as a critical backbone for grid stability and industrial development in the state.
The exceptional rankings underscore Odisha’s unwavering commitment to building an efficient, reliable, and future-ready energy sector. High Plant Load Factor values serve as a direct indicator of maximum plant availability, optimal fuel management, minimal forced outages, and meticulous technical upkeep.
Driving this operational transformation on the ground, Managing Director of OPGC Shri Kedar Ranjan Pandu is actively working to scale up the company’s performance to even greater heights. Under his leadership, the organization is implementing advanced maintenance practices, digital management frameworks, strict adherence to environmental norms, and targeted modernization programs aimed at ensuring long-term asset reliability.
Looking ahead, OPGC is pursuing an ambitious roadmap that includes life extension work for older generation units, environmental compliance upgrades, and expansion into green energy initiatives, including solar power generation and potential expansion under Stage-3 projects. This sustained focus on operational excellence reaffirms Odisha’s standing as a self-reliant power hub dedicated to fueling economic growth and energy security.
