Heavy Rains Alert

Bhubaneswar: The Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has issued an urgent weather bulletin warning residents of impending heavy rains, severe thunderstorms, and lightning across multiple regions of Odisha.

Recent observations show varied rainfall across the state. Malkangiri recorded the highest 24 hour rainfall ending in the morning with 33.3 mm, followed by Chatrapur with 21.2 mm. Daytime rainfall between 0830 and 1730 hours IST was most significant in Rayagada at 21.8 mm and Daringbadi at 14.0 mm. Temperature readings peaked in Nuapada at 35.0 degrees Celsius, while Bhubaneswar and Paralakhemundi reached a maximum of 34.2 degrees Celsius.

The current synoptic situation indicates that the monsoon trough at mean sea level passes through Ganganagar, Rohtak, the center of a low-pressure area over northern parts of central Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhpur, Muzaffarpur, and extends east-southeast toward Mizoram.

For the immediate 24-hour period valid up to the morning of July 11, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur at a few places across all districts of Odisha. A yellow warning has been issued for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 30 to 40 kmph at isolated spots in Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada, Nawrangpur, Rayagada, and Koraput. Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in the Khordha and Cuttack districts.

Over the next few days, the weather pattern will shift slightly. From July 11 to July 13, light to moderate rain will continue at a few places, with yellow warnings for thunderstorms and gusty winds confined mostly to Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.

An increase in precipitation is anticipated from July 13 through July 17, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers becoming likely at many places across all districts. Heavy rainfall warnings are specifically noted for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on July 13 and 14, expanding to Balasore by July 15, and shifting toward Bargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj by July 16. The subsequent three-day outlook indicates no large changes in the weather pattern.

In the capital city of Bhubaneswar and its neighborhood, residents can expect a generally cloudy sky over the next 24 hours with the possibility of thunder or lightning. Temperatures in the capital are forecast to hover around a maximum of 32 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 26 degrees Celsius.

Fishermen along the Odisha coast can proceed with normal operations, as the meteorological department has issued no specific adverse weather warnings for coastal waters over the next five days.
