AI Traffic System For Safety

Bhubaneswar: Chief of State Transport Authority (STA) of Odisha, Shri Amitabh Thakur has informed that Odisha Government has implemented the advanced Intelligent Enforcement Management System (IEMS) across four new key highway routes in the state. This technological intervention aims to enhance road safety, curb traffic violations, and streamline enforcement mechanisms using automation.

Following the deployment, STA Chief Shri Amitabh Thakur issued a stern warning to commuters, urging strict adherence to traffic regulations as the new system begins active monitoring.

The high-tech surveillance and enforcement infrastructure has been rolled out on four major road stretches connecting significant commercial and regional hubs within Odisha. The specified routes include the Berhampur to Taptapani route, the Berhampur to Bhanjanagar route, the Manguli to Sambalpur route, and the Sambalpur to Rourkela route. These corridors experience substantial daily traffic volumes, making them critical focus areas for reducing road mishaps and improving speed compliance.

The Intelligent Enforcement Management System operates as an integrated network of high-resolution cameras, speed detection sensors, and automated data processing units installed at strategic points along these highways. By leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, the system can automatically identify multiple types of traffic infractions without requiring manual human intervention on the spot. It monitors vehicle speeds in real-time, detects instances of dangerous or reckless driving, tracks unauthorized lane changes, and identifies commuters riding without helmets or driving without seatbelts.

When a violation occurs, the system captures high-definition visual evidence, including the vehicle license plate, time, and location. This data is instantly transmitted to a centralized control room where the vehicle registration details are retrieved from the national database. Subsequently, an automated e-challan or penalty notice is generated and sent directly to the registered owner of the offending vehicle. This technological approach ensures round-the-clock monitoring, eliminates human bias, and increases the efficiency of the transport department in enforcing the Motor Vehicles Act.

Transport Commissioner Shri Amitabh Thakur emphasized that the primary objective of this system is to save lives by fostering a culture of disciplined driving rather than merely penalizing citizens.
