An Emotional Homecoming

Baripada: In a deeply emotional and quiet moment away from the public gaze, President Shrimati Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi came together on Saturday in the small village of Pahadpur, tucked away in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.

The visit carried immense personal weight, as Pahadpur is the native village of the President’s late husband, Shyam Charan Murmu, a place tethered to the profound personal tragedies she endured before rising to become India’s first tribal president.

The atmosphere in the village was a blend of solemn reverence and vibrant celebration. The President, who was already waiting in the village, personally received the Prime Minister upon his arrival.

The local residents enveloped the leaders in the warmth of their heritage, offering a ceremonial welcome filled with the rhythmic beat of traditional drums, showers of fresh flowers, and tribal dances.

Mud walls across the village were beautifully adorned with intricate tribal motifs and traditional artwork, while children and women lined the streets, transforming the heavily secured area into a space of communal joy.

Stepping into the spiritual heart of the community, both leaders honored the deeply rooted traditions of the local tribes. As dictated by custom, the President, the Prime Minister, and even members of their security detail were presented with traditional Santhali garments before entering the sacred spaces.

They walked together through the trees to offer prayers at Gosani Peeth, a site dedicated to honoring ancestors, and the Santhali and Ho Jaheras, the sacred groves where tribal deities are believed to reside. In a quiet tribute to the earth and the community, they also planted saplings within the groves.

Damayanti Beshra, an Ol Chiki scholar, noted that seeing both the head of state and the head of government pray at these sacred groves made it an unforgettable, deeply validating day for the tribal people of Odisha.

The emotional core of the day deepened as the two leaders visited the local school and Skill Centre. The institution was established by President Murmu herself, built as a living monument of love in memory of her late husband and her two beloved sons, Laxman and Sipun, all three of whom passed away in a series of devastating losses years ago.

Inside, Prime Minister Shri Modi paid a silent, floral tribute at the statue of Shyam Charan Murmu. He then spent time interacting gently with the students, bringing a sense of hope to a place born out of grief.

Before leaving the village, the leaders walked through an exhibition highlighting local tribal craftsmanship and products, celebrating the resilience and creativity of the community.

Having paid their respects to the past and the sacred traditions of the land, President Shrimati Murmu and Prime Minister Shri Modi departed for Rairangpur to attend a public program marking the second anniversary of the Government in Odisha.
