Odisha Plans High Value Crops

Bhubaneswar: Shri Sachin Ramachandra Jadhav, Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, has launched a major initiative to pivot Odisha’s agricultural focus toward high-value crops and specialized processing.

Known by peers as the Field Marshal for his hands-on approach and direct engagement with the farming community, Shri Jadhav is driving a transformation that aims to turn traditional cultivation into a wealth-generating enterprise for smallholders.

A central pillar of this strategy is the elevation of Kandhamal’s GI-tagged turmeric. During a recent review of the KASAM project with the Collector of Kandhamal and senior horticulture officials, Shri Jadhav pushed for the inclusion of this unique variety as a specialized component under the state’s Spices scheme.

His vision involves a two-pronged attack: securing a high-quality seed supply and establishing robust departmental support for on-site processing. By processing turmeric within the region, farmers can move up the value chain, transitioning from sellers of raw commodities to providers of high-demand, value-added products.

This overdrive extends beyond turmeric to other high-value commodities suited for Odisha’s diverse micro-climates. Jadhav’s recent deliberations have targeted the expansion of black pepper cultivation and the modernization of millet processing units.

Under his leadership, the department is also focusing on exotic and high-margin horticultural crops like dragon fruit and capsicum, which have shown massive potential for export and profit.

By integrating climate-resilient practices and leveraging GI tags, Jadhav is positioning the state as a hub for premium agricultural products, ensuring that government schemes translate into tangible financial growth for the over 80 lakh farmers across the state.
