Bhubaneswar: The 2026 Rajya Sabha elections in Odisha have turned into a dramatic standoff between conscience and the whip, as political parties scramble to protect their numbers before the March 16 vote.
With four seats in the Upper House up for grabs, the battle has shifted into a tactical contest between the Governing Bharatiya Janata Party and a combined Opposition front.
The BJP, holding 78 seats in the 147-member Assembly along with the support of three Independents, has comfortably fielded State President Shri Manmohan Samal and sitting MP Shri Sujeet Kumar as its official candidates.
However, the party has complicated the math by backing a third candidate, former Union Minister Shri Dilip Ray, who is contesting as an Independent.
This move has forced the Biju Janata Dal and the Congress into an alliance to support Dr. Datteswar Hota as a joint common candidate for the final seat.
The Biju Janata Dal has recently intensified its disciplinary measures by issuing a final notice to two suspended legislators, Shri Sanatan Mahakud and Shri Arabinda Mahapatra.
Party leadership has made it explicitly clear that they must vote for the official party candidate or face immediate disqualification from the Assembly. Sanatan Mahakud, the influential MLA from Champua, and Shri Arabinda Mahapatra, representing Patkura, have both been under fire for alleged anti-party activities.
While Shri Mahakud has publicly denied wrongdoing, the party is using the threat of disqualification to ensure its voting strength remains intact during the secret ballot process.
The Biju Janata Dal has taken an unprecedented step to secure its ranks by arranging for its MLAs to spend the night at Naveen Niwas, the residence of party supremo Shree Naveen Patnaik. This overnight stay follows intense training sessions on the preferential voting system and serves as a literal shield against poaching attempts.
Simultaneously, the Indian National Congress is grappling with internal instability as the election date nears. The party issued a stern ultimatum to Mohana MLA Dasarathi Gomango, who had been incommunicado for several days.
In a dramatic turn, Shri Gomango has reportedly resurfaced and broken his silence, stating that he will vote according to his conscience or “Bibek.” This statement has sent shockwaves through the Congress and BJD camps, as “voting as per conscience” is often viewed in political circles as a precursor to cross-voting.
With Dilip Ray needing only a few additional votes to secure a win, the defiance of these key legislators has turned the fourth seat into a high-stakes gamble. The outcome will determine whether party discipline can withstand the pressure of this intense power struggle.
