Bhubaneswar: The Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) celebrated its Foundation Day on 1 March at its regional office in Pokhariput, Bhubaneswar, marking a significant milestone in the governance of India’s mineral wealth.
During the event, Shri Pankaj Lochan Mohanty, Chairman and Managing Director of MGM Group, was formally honored for his distinguished contributions to the mining industry and his steadfast commitment to the socio-cultural fabric of Odisha.
As a prominent figure in the mineral sector, Shri Mohanty has been a vocal advocate for sustainable mining practices that align industrial growth with ecological responsibility.
Under his leadership, the MGM Group has evolved from its core iron ore operations in Sundargarh into a diversified conglomerate, consistently emphasizing technical excellence and resource optimization. The recognition by IBM underscores his role in driving the state’s mineral economy toward a more modern and transparent framework.
Beyond the industrial landscape, the felicitation highlighted Shri Mohanty’s unique approach to corporate citizenship, where the extraction of minerals is deeply intertwined with the preservation of heritage.
He has emerged as a major patron of Odisha’s art, culture and indigenous traditions, most notably through his efforts to revive the “Kansa” or traditional bell metal craft.
By supporting artisan communities and documenting ancient metallurgical techniques, he has bridged the gap between heavy industry and grassroots cultural preservation.
The ceremony at the Pokhariput office was attended by senior officials from the Indian Bureau of Mines, industry experts, and stakeholders from the mining fraternity.
Speakers noted that the honor bestowed upon Shri Mohanty reflects a broader vision where the wealth generated from the earth serves as a catalyst for both economic prosperity and the safeguarding of the state’s artistic legacy, including his significant patronage of Odissi dance and sports infrastructure.
Accepting the honor, Shri Mohanty reiterated his commitment to the vision of a Viksit Odisha 2036 and Viksit Bharat 2047, stating that the true value of the mining sector lies in its ability to empower people and protect the cultural identity that defines the region.
