Gopalpur Beach Festival Opens

Berhampur: The scenic shores of Gopalpur-on-Sea transformed into a vibrant hub of tradition and progress as Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi graced the valedictory evening of the Gopalpur Beach Festival 2026. Describing the festival as a perfect blend of history, culture, and nature, the Chief Minister emphasized how the event showcases the unique identity of Odisha and the rich cultural legacy of Ganjam district.

The concluding ceremony was marked by significant developmental milestones, with the Chief Minister launching projects worth over 492 crore for the region. This includes the inauguration of 15 projects valued at 50 crore and the foundation stone laying for 64 others worth 442 crore. Key initiatives focus on health infrastructure, student hostels, and road connectivity. Notably, 32 crore has been earmarked specifically for the beautification and modernization of the Gopalpur beachfront to enhance its global appeal.

In a move to honor the state’s literary roots, the Chief Minister directed the reinstatement of the prestigious Upendra Bhanja Chair at Berhampur University, which had been inactive for years. He further announced that the birth anniversary of Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja will now be observed as a state festival. Starting May 16th this year, a seven-day long celebration will be organized across the state to pay tribute to the legendary poet.

The evening began with a traditional sea aarti performed by the Chief Minister, adding a spiritual touch to the festivities. During his address to tourists and locals, he lauded Ganjam as a leader in art and literature. He highlighted that the festival serves as a vital platform for local artisans and SHG members, creating economic opportunities while preserving heritage. He also praised the community’s commitment to cleanliness, noting that the Blue Flag certification for Pati-Sonapur beach is a matter of pride, with efforts underway to secure similar status for Gopalpur and Nolia Nuagaon.

Looking toward the future of maritime tourism and economy, the Chief Minister shared plans for the massive expansion of Gopalpur Port with an investment of 16,554 crore. This expansion aims to boost cargo capacity to 50 million metric tonnes and generate employment for 5,000 youth. Additionally, a new major port at Bahuda is planned with an investment of 21,500 crore, a project supported by the Prime Minister to strengthen the state’s port-led economy.

The event also saw the launch of the festival souvenir Shamuka, a coffee table book on Ganjam’s heritage, and the Ganjam-360 mobile app, designed to offer a comprehensive guide for visitors. Minister for Fisheries and Animal Resources Development, Shri Gokulananda Mallik, was also present, noting that this visit marks the Chief Minister’s eighth trip to the district, reflecting a deep commitment to the region’s cultural and industrial growth.
