State Honors Netaji, Surendra Sai

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Government hosted a poignant tribute to the legendary freedom fighters Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and Veer Surendra Sai on the occasion of their state-level birth anniversaries. Organized under the aegis of the Information and Public Relations Department at Jayadeva Bhawan, the event served as a powerful reminder of the indomitable spirit and sacrifices that paved the way for India’s independence.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Anuj Kumar Daspatnaik, Director of Information and Public Relations, delivered an evocative welcome address that resonated with cultural pride and nationalistic fervor. He described the illustrious lives of Netaji and Veer Surendra Sai as eternal lessons in patriotism, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication. Shri Daspatnaik emphasized that the ideals of these two icons are not merely chapters in history books but are the ethical foundations upon which modern India is built. He issued a stirring call to the youth, urging them to internalize these values and take an active role in nation-building and social service.

The ceremony was enriched by the insights of noted educationist and litterateur Shri Narayan Panda, who joined as the chief speaker. He highlighted the distinct yet equally formidable paths taken by the two heroes. While Netaji chose the path of armed struggle, relinquishing high-ranking positions and comfort to dedicate twenty-three years to the motherland, Veer Surendra Sai’s strategic guerrilla warfare and immense courage left the British forces repeatedly humbled. Shri Panda noted that Veer Surendra Sai’s legacy is defined by thirty-seven years of imprisonment, a testament to his unbreakable resolve for the soil.

The event commenced with the guests offering floral tributes to the portraits of the martyrs. To involve the younger generation, the department organized a painting competition where students from various schools were recognized for their creative expressions of patriotism. In the category for classes six to eight, Biswaranjan Barik secured the first position, followed by Priyanka Nayak and Smile Beuria. In the senior category for classes nine and ten, N. Shibachandan Acharya took the top honor, with Barsharani Behera and Rashmi Sahu winning the second and third prizes respectively.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Smt. Sucheta Priyadarshini, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations. The gathering saw a large turnout of senior officials including Financial Advisor-cum-Under Secretary Shri Prithi Raj Pani and Under Secretary Shri Pranab Kumar Das, alongside students, media representatives, and intellectuals who joined in honoring the golden legacy of Odisha’s brave sons.
