National Rugby Sevens Kicks Off

Bhubaneswar: The Kalinga Stadium transformed into a hub of youthful energy and competitive spirit today as the 10th Sub-Junior National Rugby Sevens Championship officially commenced.

The prestigious tournament was inaugurated during a ceremonial event attended by high-ranking officials who underscored Odisha’s growing reputation as the sports capital of India.

Shri Suryabanshi Suraj, Minister Sports & Youth Services graced the occasion as the chief guest. While addressing the gathering of young athletes from across the country, the Minister highlighted the state’s commitment to nurturing grassroots talent and providing world-class infrastructure for various sporting disciplines, including rugby.

The ceremony also saw the gracious presence of Shri Sachin R Jadhav, IAS, Secretary Sports and Youth Services. He emphasized the importance of the Sub-Junior level as the foundational stage for identifying the next generation of international rugby stars.

Joining them was Dr. Yeddula Vijay, Director of Sports, who noted that hosting such national-level championships at the Kalinga Stadium ensures that young players gain experience in professional environments early in their careers.

The championship features teams from numerous states and union territories, all vying for the top honors in the Sevens format, which is known for its high speed and intensity. Over the coming days, the stadium will witness a series of fast-paced matches as the best sub-junior talent in the country competes for the national title.

Local fans and rugby enthusiasts have turned out in significant numbers to support the participants, further elevating the atmosphere of this milestone tenth edition.
