Odisha Celebrates Christmas

Bhubaneswar: Christmas celebrations in Odisha began with deep religious devotion and festive spirit as thousands of devotees gathered for midnight mass across the state. In the capital city of Bhubaneswar, St. Vincent’s Pro Cathedral and the Satyanagar Catholic Church saw massive congregations where Archbishop John Barwa of the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Archdiocese led the prayers. During the service, the Archbishop emphasized the true essence of the festival, urging people to embrace the path of peace, love, and brotherhood in a world often divided by conflict.

The religious observances were marked by the traditional ringing of bells at the stroke of midnight, followed by hymns and carols sung in both English and Odia. Many churches throughout the state, including the historic Holy Rosary Cathedral in Cuttack and the Cuttack Odia Baptist Church, were beautifully illuminated with stars and colorful lights. Large nativity scenes, or cribs, depicting the birth of Jesus in a manger, were a central point of attraction for both the faithful and visitors from other communities who joined the celebrations to experience the serene atmosphere.

In western Odisha, particularly in the Rourkela and Sundargarh regions, the celebrations took a more somber and reflective tone this year. Bishop Kishor Kumar Kujur of Rourkela issued a pastoral letter calling for a low-key observance. He urged the community to stand in solidarity with local farmers facing land acquisition challenges, suggesting that the faithful avoid grand feasts and the purchase of new clothes. This call for restraint highlighted the intersection of religious faith and social justice within the local Christian community.

Meanwhile, in tribal-dominated areas like Kandhamal, the festival was celebrated with traditional fervor amidst tight security. Residents participated in morning prayers and community gatherings, often incorporating local customs such as decorating homes with mango leaves and coconuts alongside traditional Christmas trees. Across the state, the festivities are expected to continue through the day with community feasts and gift-giving, as religious leaders continue to share the message of hope and renewed life.
