Bindusagar: An Odia Emotion

Bhubaneswar: The film Bindusagar has had a significant and positive impact on the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), particularly in elevating the profile of Odia cinema on a national and global stage.

The film’s focus on the sacred Bindusagar lake, described as reflecting the “pure circle of life,” presents a unique, powerful symbol of Odia emotional connection to the world audience

Bindusagar brings a hyperlocal story deeply rooted in Odia culture, tradition, and emotion to a universal audience. Its successful premiere showcases the power of authenticity in regional cinema

Director Abhishek Swain began the discussion in the Press Meet by emphasizing that the film is a tribute to an emotion cherished by millions of Odia people, an emotion rooted in the sacred lake of Bindusagar. He described the lake as a reflection of the pure circle of life, where the seemingly contradictory events of funerals and naming ceremonies for newborns coexist.

Shri Swain credited his producer, Shiladitya Bora, for sharing his vision to create a genuine Odia film for the Odia audience, stating that Bora instantly connected with the concept and the title. He expressed satisfaction in bringing the story to life in an engaging, commercial, and heartfelt way that celebrates the art, culture, and rich heritage of Odisha.

Taking the cue, Producer Shri Bora thanked IFFI for giving Bindusagar an honorable start to its journey. He revealed that he initially encouraged Swain, who had approached him to make a Hindi film, to instead create an Odia film, citing Swain’s local recognition. Bora had long harbored a desire to create a film that every Odia, from the working class to professionals abroad, could connect with. The producer was immediately struck by the title, which he felt perfectly represented the circle of life.

Shri Bora detailed that the film was carefully designed to touch the hearts of the audience, with music being a core part of the strategy to reach every corner of Odisha. He noted that the film contains eight songs, each blending naturally into the storytelling, making Bindusagar a very musical film.

Actress Prakruti Mishra expressed her gratitude for a meaningful character, stating that as a female actor, such roles that truly allow for showcasing one’s craft are rare. She called Bindusagar that opportunity, feeling liberated to be “real and raw” on screen without the need for glamour or extravagance.

Actor Dipannit Dasmohapatra shared that he considers himself a director’s actor, focused on bringing the director’s vision to life. He praised Director Swain for being “incredibly sorted and clear-headed,” which made the process fulfilling.

Shri Dasmohapatra noted that the film beautifully captures every aspect of Odisha—its culture, traditions, food, and emotions—making his participation in a film that authentically represents their roots truly special.

Director Shri Swain concluded by stating his belief that music and locations are the two strongest identities that can help the Odia industry break out. He also took a moment to pay tribute to the late Humane Sagar, one of Odisha’s finest artists and popular singers, who passed away just ten days prior. Swain shared that the late singer’s last song is featured in the film, and he dedicated the film to his memory.
