Green Diwali Inspires Citizens

New Delhi: The WWF-India’s Program Centre – Resource Partner (PC-RP), supported by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, has renewed its commitment to ‘Mission LiFE’ by advocating for a conscious and sustainable celebration of Diwali. The campaign focuses on promoting a Swachh (clean), Shubh (auspicious), and Green festival.

Building on the significant impact of its previous campaign, ‘Breath of Change – Clean Air, Blue Skies’, which successfully engaged over 200,000 citizens through 25 awareness programs across Delhi, the Centre continues its mission to embed environmental awareness within cultural festivities.

In a recent initiative, the WWF EIACP (Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme) inaugurated a striking ‘Breathable Art’ installation in Rohini. This artwork serves as a powerful symbol of community-led commitment to clean air and a pollution-free future, directly tying into the ethos of a ‘Green Diwali’.

In alignment with ‘Mission LiFE,’ the WWF EIACP is encouraging citizens to adopt several eco-friendly practices this festive season. These recommendations include:

  • Replacing plastic decorations with biodegradable or upcycled materials.
  • Creating rangoli using natural ingredients such as rice flour, flower petals, and turmeric.
  • Choosing energy-saving options like LED lights, solar lanterns, or traditional diyas.
  • Supporting locally made gifts and products to effectively reduce their carbon footprint.
  • Avoiding single-use plastics and actively minimising overall festive waste.

Through its ‘Green Diwali’ campaign, WWF EIACP aims to cultivate a shared sense of environmental responsibility. The initiative highlights that making conscious personal choices can contribute to safeguarding both the environment and public health while fully upholding the celebratory spirit of the festival.

This effort also reinforces India’s dedication to global climate goals, specifically Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13 on Climate Action. The WWF EIACP extends an invitation to all citizens to take a pledge for a ‘clean, green, and plastic-free Diwali,’ transforming the festival into one that brings light not only to homes but to the planet as a whole.
