Bhubaneswar: Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, has approved the establishment of the ‘NaMo Semiconductor Laboratory’ at IIT Bhubaneswar, marking a significant milestone for Odisha’s rapidly growing semiconductor ecosystem.
Funded under the MPLAD Scheme with an estimated cost of Rs. 4.95 crore (INR 4.6 crore for equipment and INR 35 lakh for software), the lab is strategically positioned to transform the state into a key center for semiconductor research, skilling, and innovation.
The new lab directly supports the ambitious India Semiconductor Mission projects recently approved for Odisha, solidifying the state’s role in the national chip manufacturing landscape.
Existing Foundation: IIT Bhubaneswar is already home to the Silicon Carbide Research and Innovation Centre (SiCRIC). The NaMo Lab will significantly enhance this infrastructure, expanding the institute’s existing cleanroom and R&D facilities to offer critical support to the industry.
Targeted Support for State Projects: Odisha has secured approval for two major semiconductor projects: An integrated facility for Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based compound semiconductors and an advanced 3D glass packaging facility.
The NaMo Semiconductor Lab will act as a vital research and talent development pipeline, specifically preparing industry-ready professionals for these and other upcoming chip manufacturing and packaging units across Bharat.
The lab is designed to contribute to Bharat’s deep talent pool by equipping the youth with industry-ready skills.
