Urge For EV Use

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) celebrated its 42nd Foundation Day on September 15, with a renewed focus on tackling environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.

The event, held here was graced by Governor Dr.Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Secretary Shri Manoj Ahuja and other senior officials.

Governor of Odisha, Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, who served as the chief guest urged citizens to adopt electric vehicles (EVs) and install rooftop solar systems to reduce pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. He also praised the OSPCB’s initiatives in air quality improvement and river restoration.

Sri Satyabrata Sahu, the Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Department, addressed the gathering, noting that the increasing demands of society and technological advancements have created serious environmental concerns. He emphasized that pollution prevention and control are now globally essential for human health and sustainable growth.

A key achievement highlighted was the significant improvement in river water quality. According to Shri Sahu, the number of polluted river stretches in Odisha has been reduced from 19 to just 6, due to measures taken by various stakeholders. This success was attributed to the strict monitoring of Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) in industries, as well as Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and septage treatment plants in urban areas. The OSPCB was commended for its role as a regulator and guide in balancing industrial growth with environmental responsibility.

The speech also touched upon the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). ACS Shri Sahu stated that the Board has implemented action plans under the NCAP in seven cities and industrial clusters: Angul, Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Kalinganagar, Rourkela, and Talcher. The goal of this mission is to reduce particulate matter levels by 20-30% compared to 2017 levels.

The celebration also included the launch of three new OSPCB websites and publications, and the presentation of awards for Pollution Control Excellence and Appreciation to outstanding institutions.

ACS Shri Sahu concluded by expressing his appreciation for the continuous efforts of all the officers and staff of the Board for making it a respected organization.
