Cabinet Clears Capital Ring Road

Bhubaneswar: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given its approval for the construction of a 110.875 km, 6-Lane Access-Controlled Capital Region Ring Road in Odisha.

This project, which will be built on a Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM), has a total capital cost of Rs. 8307.74 crore.

The primary objective of this project is to alleviate the significant traffic congestion currently experienced on the existing National Highway between Rameshwar and Tangi.

This stretch passes through the heavily urbanized cities of Khordha, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack, which are major bottlenecks for both passenger and commercial vehicles.

The new 6-Lane Access-Controlled Greenfield Highway will serve as a dedicated bypass for heavy commercial traffic, diverting it away from the urban centers of Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, and Khordha.

This will not only improve the efficiency of freight movement and reduce logistics costs but also contribute to the overall socio-economic growth of Odisha and other eastern states.

The project’s alignment is strategically designed to provide seamless connectivity by integrating with:

  • Three major National Highways: NH-55, NH-57, and NH-655
  • One State Highway: SH-65

This upgraded corridor will also enhance multi-modal integration by linking with several key nodes, including:

  • 10 Economic Nodes
  • 04 Social Nodes
  • 05 Logistic Nodes

Furthermore, the road will connect to a major Railway Station, an Airport, a proposed Multi-Modal Logistics Park (MMLP), and two major Ports. These connections will facilitate the faster movement of both goods and passengers across the region.

Upon its completion, the bypass is poised to play a pivotal role in regional economic growth. It will strengthen connectivity between major religious and economic hubs, creating new opportunities for trade and industrial development.

The project is also expected to be a significant generator of employment, with projections of approximately 74.43 lakh person-days of direct employment and 93.04 lakh person-days of indirect employment.

This will lead to new avenues for growth, development, and prosperity in the surrounding regions.
