Radhakrishnan; NDA VP Candidate

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced that C.P. Radhakrishnan, the current Governor of Maharashtra, has been chosen as the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election.

The announcement was made by BJP President Jagat Prakash Nadda following a meeting of the party’s Parliamentary Board in New Delhi. The decision was the culmination of a process in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Nadda were authorized by all NDA allies to select the candidate.

In his statement, Shri Nadda called on all NDA partners and other parties to extend their full support to Shri Radhakrishnan’s candidacy, emphasizing his long and distinguished career in public service.

The move is seen as a strategic choice, given Shri Radhakrishnan’s extensive political experience and his background as a two-time Member of Parliament from Coimbatore. His selection also sends a message of representation, drawing on his history as a former state president of the BJP in Tamil Nadu.

The election for the Vice President of India is scheduled for September 9, 2025, following the resignation of the former Vice President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar. With the NDA holding a comfortable majority in the electoral college, Radhakrishnan’s election is widely considered to be a certainty.

The Opposition’s INDIA bloc is also expected to announce its own candidate, but the NDA’s unified show of strength and numbers in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha positions it favorably to secure the victory.

Nomination papers for the Vice Presidential election are due to be filed on August 21, and the BJP has reportedly asked all its Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states to be in Delhi for the occasion, signaling a strong display of alliance unity.
