Low Pressure Poised To Intensify

Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area is on the verge of forming over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, off the coasts of south Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh.

According to a special weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday, August 17, 2025, this system is likely to bring a new spell of heavy rainfall and squally winds to the region.

The formation is currently being influenced by an upper-air cyclonic circulation, which was observed at 0530 hrs IST this morning, extending up to 9.6 km above mean sea level. Forecasters predict that under this influence, a low-pressure area will take shape over the same area within the next 12 hours.

Following its formation, the system is expected to track west-northwestwards and gather strength, likely concentrating into a depression within the subsequent 24 hours. The depression is then forecast to make landfall, crossing the south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh coasts in the early morning of Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

Local authorities and disaster management teams in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh have been placed on alert. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the deep sea along and off the coasts of south Odisha, west-central Bay, and northwest Bay of Bengal from August 18 to August 20, as sea conditions are expected to become rough to very rough.

Residents in low-lying areas and coastal districts are urged to remain cautious, as the anticipated heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruption of traffic. The IMD has already issued warnings, including Yellow and Orange Alerts for several districts, indicating the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning. The public is advised to stay updated with the latest weather advisories and take necessary precautions to ensure safety.
