Bhubaneswar: Odisha is making a remarkable push towards a sustainable and self-reliant energy future, with Principal Secretary Energy, Vishal Kumar Dev, leading from the front.
The state has achieved near-total electrification of its villages and is now aggressively pursuing ambitious targets in renewable energy, positioning itself as a national leader.
According to a recent report, Odisha has electrified an impressive 99% of its census villages and provided electricity connections to over 97 lakh BPL (Below Poverty Line) households. This significant achievement is a direct result of the successful implementation of central government initiatives like the Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and SAUBHAGYA.
While cementing its role in rural and residential electrification, Odisha is also a major industrial powerhouse, boasting a captive power generation capacity of over 12 gigawatts (GW). This robust power infrastructure is a key driver of the state’s economic growth.
Looking ahead, the focus is on a monumental shift towards green energy. Under the guidance of Principal Secretary Shri Dev, the state has outlined a clear roadmap with specific goals under flagship schemes:
- Decentralized Solar: A target of 1,500 MW of decentralized solar power is set to be achieved through the PM-KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar schemes. This initiative aims to empower households and farmers with clean energy solutions.
- Solar Pumps for Agriculture: The state plans to install 11,000 standalone solar pumps and integrate 50,000 agricultural pumps under feeders to ensure a reliable and sustainable power supply for the farming community.
- Residential Solar: A major push is underway to install rooftop solar systems in 10 lakh homes, which will not only reduce the carbon footprint but also provide long-term economic benefits to citizens.
These ambitious targets demonstrate Odisha’s unwavering commitment to balancing economic development with environmental responsibility. The state’s strategic approach, encompassing both large-scale industrial power and decentralized renewable energy, is setting a benchmark for a truly green and inclusive energy transition.
