Bhubaneswar: The Barkul region of Chilika Lake, a renowned biodiversity hotspot, is poised for significant tourism development, as announced by Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan and Odisha’s Minister of Works, Law, and Excise, Prithiviraj Harichandan. The Ministers, who recently enjoyed the natural splendor of the area, emphasized the region’s immense potential for drawing visitors.
Speaking on the sidelines of their visit, Union Minister Shri Pradhan stated, “Experiencing the natural beauty in the Barkul region of Chilika Lake is a unique sensation. This area, a treasure trove of biodiversity and natural splendor, holds immense potential for tourism.” He added that the central government’s Swadesh Darshan scheme will be a key driver in the development of Barkul and other parts of the lake.
The Swadesh Darshan scheme is a centrally-sponsored initiative focused on developing thematic tourism circuits across India. Under this scheme, projects have been sanctioned for developing key destinations, including Barkul, to enhance tourism infrastructure and visitor experience. The goal is to promote sustainable and responsible tourism that benefits local communities while preserving the natural environment.
Chilika Lake is a vast brackish water lagoon and a prime example of a delicate ecosystem. It is a vital wintering ground for millions of migratory birds from as far as the Caspian Sea and the Himalayas, and is also home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. The development plans under the Swadesh Darshan scheme are expected to focus on eco-tourism initiatives, such as birdwatching and boating, while ensuring the protection of the lake’s rich flora and fauna.
Union Minister Shri Pradhan’s comments signal a concerted effort by the government to leverage the unique appeal of Chilika to boost tourism in Odisha, creating new opportunities for local livelihoods and showcasing the state’s natural heritage on a national and international stage.
