Odisha, IIT Madras Partner For Road Safety

Bhubaneswar: The Government of Odisha, in a pioneering collaboration with IIT Madras, is set to launch a real-time Road Safety Dashboard called “Road Awareness and Traffic Harmony.” The initiative, which aims to build safer roads through data and community participation, was the central topic of a high-level meeting led by Smt. Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary, Commerce & Transport Department.

Road safety is a top priority for the state, which has already implemented several key initiatives like observing Zero Accident Day every month, the ‘Come Home Safe’ campaign, and the deployment of the Surakhya mascot. The new dashboard will unify these efforts under a powerful, data-driven platform to enhance their impact.

The comprehensive digital solution will provide real-time data, analytics, and visual insights for proactive road safety interventions. It will serve as a central platform for policymakers and citizens, bridging technology and public participation. A key feature is the citizen-centric module, Sahayaka (ସହାୟକ), which will allow individuals to report accidents and help reduce emergency response times. Citizens can also use the platform to nominate Raahveers—local heroes and first responders who support road safety at the community level.

The dashboard’s integration with crucial systems like the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) and eDAR-CCTNS is nearing completion. IIT Madras is also integrating its Sanjaya Road Safety Super App into the dashboard ecosystem, making it a one-stop solution for all road safety stakeholders in the state.

Smt. Usha Padhee emphasized that “Road safety is a collective responsibility, and this Dashboard is a major leap forward in using real-time data, citizen input, and institutional coordination to save lives.” Prof. Venkatesh Balasubramanian of IIT Madras added that the platform will “democratize road safety and enable timely action through seamless integration.”

The meeting concluded with a joint resolution from all stakeholders to fast-track the implementation of the dashboard, working together to make Odisha’s roads safer for everyone.

The meeting was also attended by Transport Commissioner Shri Amitabh Thakur, IG Crime Branch Shri Sarthak Sarangi, and other senior officials.
