Bhubaneswar: Nurses, who are crucial to healthcare, must be empowered through leadership training to meet the sector’s growing demands, said Saswati Das, Vice-President of Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan (SOA), on Wednesday.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural Management Development Program (MDP) focused on nursing leadership, organized by the Institute of Business and Computer Studies (IBCS), SOA’s faculty of management sciences, Ms. Das emphasized the multifaceted nature of nursing leadership. “Leadership in nursing is about making informed decisions in critical situations, creating a positive work culture, and adapting to constant changes in the healthcare environment,” she stated.
Ms. Das highlighted that nurses are at the heart of patient care, and effective leadership is vital for ensuring safety, efficiency, and compassion in healthcare delivery. She elaborated that a true nursing leader not only manages tasks but also motivates teams, communicates effectively, and advocates for both patients and staff. Given the increasing demands on health systems, she stressed that empowering nurses through leadership training is no longer optional but essential. The program, she added, offers nurses a platform to grow, share experiences, and build confidence to lead with integrity and empathy.
SOA Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pradipta Kumar Nanda also addressed the program, reiterating the significant role of nurses in the healthcare system. Other speakers included Prof. Ayasa Kanta Mohanty, Dean of IBCS; Prof. Manoranjan Dash, Additional Dean of the institute; and Dr. Sasmita Das, Dean of SUM Nursing College. Dr. B.B. Mishra, the program coordinator, delivered the vote of thanks.
