NHRC Seeks Caste Atrocity Report

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of a disturbing media report concerning the brutal assault and humiliation of two individuals belonging to the Scheduled Caste community in Ganjam district, Odisha.

The incident, which reportedly occurred on June 26, 2025, involved the victims being beaten, forced to consume grass and drain water, and subjected to forced tonsuring of their heads, allegedly by members of another community on suspicion of illegally smuggling cattle. Their mobile phones were also snatched during the ordeal.

The Commission, upon reviewing the gravity of the allegations, has observed that the reported events, if true, constitute serious violations of human rights.

In response, the NHRC has promptly issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Odisha. They have been directed to submit a comprehensive report on the matter within two weeks.

This report is expected to detail the actions taken against the perpetrators responsible for this heinous act and to confirm whether any compensation has been provided to the victims.

The incident highlights the persistent challenges faced by vulnerable communities and underscores the need for robust enforcement of laws protecting human rights and preventing atrocities.

The NHRC’s swift intervention demonstrates its commitment to addressing such egregious violations and ensuring accountability.
