Manali Charm For Daringbadi

Odisha’s serene eco-tourism gem, Daringbadi, often hailed as the “Kashmir of Odisha,” is on the cusp of a significant transformation, with ambitious plans to develop it into a vibrant “Mall Road” akin to Manali’s popular promenade. This major tourism initiative is a collaborative effort between the Poverty and Human Development Monitoring Agency (PHADMA) and the Department of Tourism, Government of Odisha.

The picturesque hill station in the Phulbani district, known for its captivating natural beauty, including verdant hills, dense pine forests, sprawling coffee plantations, and a perennially cool climate, already attracts a substantial number of tourists. The new development aims to significantly enhance its appeal and provide a more comprehensive visitor experience.

“We envision Daringbadi as a premier destination that offers both the tranquility of nature and the lively atmosphere of a modern tourist hub,” stated an official the Department of Tourism. “Our recent discussions with PHADMA have been highly productive, and we are committed to fast-tracking this crucial project.”

The core of the “Mall Road” vision includes:

  • A Lively Pedestrian Promenade: A dedicated, well-designed walking zone will be created, lined with shops, cafes, and various recreational facilities, inviting tourists to stroll and explore.
  • Showcasing Local Heritage: Designated areas will be set aside for local artisans to display and sell traditional Odishan handicrafts, tribal art, and indigenous products such as locally grown coffee and spices, fostering cultural exchange and supporting local livelihoods.
  • Diverse Culinary Offerings: A range of food stalls and restaurants will emerge, featuring authentic Odishan cuisine alongside popular Indian and international dishes to cater to varied tastes.
  • Enriched Recreational Spaces: Small parks, comfortable seating areas, and potential stages for cultural performances will be integrated to enhance the overall visitor experience and provide entertainment.
  • Sustainable Development: A strong emphasis will be placed on eco-friendly practices, robust waste management systems, and minimizing environmental impact to preserve Daringbadi’s inherent eco-tourism character.
  • Improved Connectivity: Efforts will be made to enhance local transportation and accessibility within and around the proposed Mall Road area.
  • Promotion of Homestays: The initiative also seeks to encourage and standardize local homestays, offering tourists authentic cultural experiences while directly benefiting the local community economically.

PHADMA, as an institution for planning and development, is expected to play a crucial role in community engagement and ensuring the project’s benefits are inclusive. The Department of Tourism will provide the essential policy framework, financial backing, strategic guidance, and extensive promotional efforts to position Daringbadi as a world-class destination.

Officials anticipate that the successful implementation of this “Mall Road” concept will lead to a significant increase in tourist footfall, robust economic growth through new employment opportunities and increased local business revenue, and an overall upliftment of the region. It is also expected to enhance visitor satisfaction through improved amenities and contribute to branding Odisha as a premier tourism state.

While the vision is bright, planners are mindful of potential challenges, including ensuring environmental sustainability, fostering active community involvement, maintaining the region’s authentic cultural identity, and addressing existing infrastructure gaps. With careful planning and collaborative efforts, Daringbadi is poised to emerge as a flagship eco-tourism destination, bringing prosperity and recognition to Odisha.
