Kalinga Studio Set For Grand Revival

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today underscored the state government’s commitment to revitalizing the Odia film industry with a directive to transform the historic Kalinga Studio into a fully modern, self-contained facility. The Chief Minister, during a visit to the studio, instructed the concerned department to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for its comprehensive modernization.

Established in 1980, Kalinga Studio once held the distinction of being the sole studio in Eastern India equipped with advanced film production technology. However, a gradual decline in demand due to the lack of contemporary equipment and technical tools led to a wane in its prominence. Efforts for its improvement have been ongoing, but the new government has prioritized its complete overhaul.

Following the new government’s assumption of office, Chief Minister Shri Majhi directed departmental officers to accelerate the studio’s modernization. In the initial phase, significant progress has been made, with the development of key areas including the tech building, entrance plaza, indoor shooting system, Kalinga Movie Magic, Avenue Land, Village Area, Iconic Landmark, Snow World, Community Hall, Bamboo Structure, Water Badi, and Green Area. The Chief Minister today urged officers to expedite the completion of the remaining works, which are being undertaken by IDCO.

Emphasizing the crucial role of a modern studio in fostering the growth of Odia cinema, Chief Minister Shri Majhi stated, “The development of this studio is very necessary for the development of Odia films. It will be made into a self-contained studio with all the latest facilities.” He further affirmed that the modernization plans would be developed in consultation with all stakeholders associated with the film industry.

Industry and Skill Development Minister Sampad Charan Swain accompanied the Chief Minister during his visit. Additional Chief Secretary, Industries, Hemant Sharma, provided the Chief Minister with a detailed briefing on the ongoing project work. Also present were Samarth Verma, Managing Director, Odisha Film Development Corporation, and Bhupinder Singh Poonia, Managing Director, IDCO.

This proactive step by the Chief Minister signals a renewed focus on bolstering the infrastructure vital for Odia film production, promising a brighter future for the state’s cinematic endeavors.
