Sambalpur: The air in Sambalpur and across Western Odisha is thick with devotion and festive cheer as the grand Sital Sasthi festival culminates today with the spectacular “Nagar Parikrama” (city procession) of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This centuries-old cultural and religious extravaganza, marking the divine marriage of the celestial couple, transforms the region into a vibrant carnival, drawing thousands of devotees and tourists alike.
Sital Sasthi, celebrated on the sixth day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Hindu month of Jyestha, is unique in its elaborate reenactment of a human wedding. The festivities, which commenced days ago, saw families from the community taking on the revered roles of the divine parents for Goddess Parvati, performing rituals like “Patra Pendi” (engagement) and “Guagunda” (invitation to deities).
The highlight of the festival, the divine marriage ceremony, took place last night, May 31st, amidst a dazzling display of lights, music, and fervent chants of “Har Har Mahadev.” Committees like Nandapada, Jhaduapada, and Mudipara spared no effort, with reports of a 1.5 quintal silver pandal at Nandapada and thousands of artists from across India showcasing a rich tapestry of traditional folk forms including Dulduli, Samprada, Ghumura, Chhau, Lavani, and Melam. Elaborate tableaux depicting mythological scenes and even modern themes added to the visual splendor of the processions.
Today, June 1st, marks the much-anticipated “Nagar Parikrama,” where the newlywed divine couple, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, embark on a grand procession through the city. Devotees are thronging the streets to witness this auspicious sight and seek blessings. The procession, led by Lord Hanuman and Lord Narsimha, is a riot of colors, sounds, and joyous participation, with acrobats, fire performers, and a cavalcade of elephants and horses adding to the regal grandeur.
Beyond Sambalpur, towns like Bargarh, Padmapur, Barpali, and Jharsuguda are also observing Sital Sasthi with immense devotion, underscoring its profound cultural significance across Western Odisha. The festival is not merely a religious observance but a powerful symbol of community unity, cultural heritage, and the enduring belief in divine love and blessings for a bountiful monsoon.
The Odisha government has extended significant support, sanctioning funds for 21 committees across Western Odisha to ensure the smooth conduct of the elaborate rituals and cultural performances. The meticulous preparations, including route clearances, uninterrupted power and water supply, and enhanced security measures, highlight the importance given to this cherished annual tradition.
As the Sital Sasthi Yatra culminates with the divine couple’s return to their temples on June 2nd, the echoes of devotion and cultural vibrancy will linger, eagerly awaiting next year’s grand celebration.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has wished people on Sital Sasthi and has allocated special funds for the Utsav.
