Odisha Lists 6 New Handicrafts

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move aimed at bolstering the handicraft sector and empowering local artisans, the Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Department has expanded its list of approved handicrafts from 55 to 61. The revised list, officially published today, includes six new additions, opening doors for government assistance to a wider range of traditional crafts.

The newly recognized handicrafts are: corrugated iron work, sisal grass work, copper metal handicrafts, malleable brass fish work, and black dhokra work. This expansion comes on the recommendation of Secretary Guha Punam Tapas Kumar and has received the official approval of Minister Pradeep Bal Samanta.

Expressing his satisfaction with the development, Minister Shri Samanta stated, “This step has been taken with the aim of developing handicrafts. As a result, the artisans will get government assistance.” The move is expected to provide crucial support to artisans engaged in these newly listed crafts, helping them to sustain their livelihoods and promote their unique skills.

The comprehensive list of 61 approved handicrafts now regulated under the Handloom, Textiles and Handicrafts Department encompasses a rich tapestry of Odisha’s artistic heritage. It includes well-known crafts such as Chandua, elaborate leather work, bamboo work, bronze and brass work, Dhokra work, stone carving, and terracotta, alongside intricate tribal arts like Dangaria Khandha art, Gonda art, Zuang art, and Saura painting.

The state government’s approval of these 61 handicrafts underscores its commitment to the development of this vital sector and to providing necessary assistance to the dedicated artisans who keep these traditions alive. This initiative is anticipated to foster growth, innovation, and greater recognition for Odisha’s diverse handicraft legacy.
