Puri: As the sacred city of Puri prepares for the grand Rath Jatra, a significant administrative matter remains unresolved: the reconstitution of the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee. The tenure of the previous committee, nominated on August 12, 2021, concluded in August 2024, yet a new panel is still pending formation.
According to sources within the Law department, the process for establishing a new managing committee was initiated in August of last year. This committee, headed by the Puri Gajapati Maharaja, plays a crucial role in overseeing the affairs of the revered Srimandir.
The selection process, governed by the Shri Jagannath Temple Act, 1955, involves a meticulous approach to ensure fair representation. Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator is entrusted with the responsibility of recommending ten members from the diverse Nijogs, the hereditary service groups associated with the temple. A key criterion in this selection is that no two representatives can be drawn from the same Nijog, ensuring a broad spectrum of voices within the committee.
To further guarantee equitable representation, a rotation system is in place for the selection of members from different Nijogs. Additionally, the Act includes a provision for a lottery system to be employed should the chief administrator face challenges in finalizing the list of recommendations.
Beyond the representatives from the temple’s traditional service groups, the state government will also nominate two individuals recognized for their significant contributions to social service. This inclusion aims to bring a wider perspective and valuable experience to the management of the temple affairs.
Despite the ongoing preparations for the annual Rath Jatra, the absence of a newly constituted managing committee raises questions about the administrative oversight during this significant event. While the Law department initiated the process several months ago, the reasons for the delay in finalizing the new panel remain unclear.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee holds significant responsibilities in the day-to-day administration of the temple, including the smooth conduct of rituals and festivals, management of temple properties, and welfare of the servitors.
The timely reconstitution of this apex body is crucial for the efficient and effective governance of one of India’s most important religious institutions, especially as it gears up for the massive influx of devotees during the upcoming Rath Jatra.
Minister Law Prithiviraj Harichandan has given timeline for the formation of the new committee several times. But till date it is yet to be reconstiuted, officials admit.
