Bhubaneswar: Severe cyclonic storm Dana hit Odisha coastline in between Habalikhati in Kendrapara district and Dhamra in Bhadrak district during mid-night and the remaining parts of the cyclone still passing through the land, the IMD said.
The landfall process was expected to continue till another one to two hours, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
It is likely to move nearly northwestwards across north Odisha and weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm by noon, the Met office said.
The system is under continuous surveillance of the Doppler weather radar at Paradip.
During the mid-night, the coastal districts of Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Balasore and nearby Jagatsinghpur district witnessed sudden increase in wind speed which reached 100 kmph to 110 kmph and extremely heavy rain.
Under its impact, trees have been uprooted at several places in the coastal districts including Dhamra & Chandbali in Bhadrak district, Rajnagar area in Kendrapara and Astarang area in Puri district. Fire Service teams are clearing roads by cutting trees uprooted. Even locals assist the rescue team to restore communication at the earliest.
Due to high tidal surges, Bagabatia village was completely marooned and cut-off from the mainland. Over 570 families residing in the coastal village have been affected by the storm. However, there was no report of any major damage or casualty so far, officials said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi was continuously reviewing the situation. He was closely monitoring the situation the entire night and also reached at the office of SRC early morning to take stock of the situation in the aftermath of the cyclone Dana.
While speaking to the media, Majhi said concerned district collectors have been asked to assess the damage caused due to cyclone Dana. The ministers, who are in the affected districts, have also been monitoring the situation.
“We have succeeded in our zero casualty mission. With the active support of the administration, we successfully managed the cyclone,” the CM said.
Under the impact of the cyclone, road communication and power supply has been disrupted in some places, which will be resumed in a war-footing way, he said.
Shri Majhi said nearly 6 lakh people will be evacuated in the wake of cyclone Dana out of which, 5.84 lakh were evacuated to safe places.
He said a total of 4,421 pregnant women were shifted to hospitals in the areas affected by the cyclone. Out of the evacuated pregnant women, 1600 deliveries were done by last evening. Both mothers and babies are doing well.
“With the blessings of Lord Jagannath, we were all able to successfully tackle the natural disaster,” he added.
Meanwhile, flight and train service resumed in Bhubaneswar as the situation returned to normal.
