Odisha Moots Circular Economy Model

Bhubaneswar: Additional Chief Secretary Home, Forest, Environment and Climate Change, Satyabrata Sahu has assured the investors and other stake holders in creating an enabling ecosystem for sustainable industrialization of Odisha with a Circular Economy Model.

ACS Shri Sahu was addressing the workshop to chalk out model on Circular Economy organized by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) here on 8 October.

ACS Shri Sahu said that progressing onto a Circular Economy is not possible without adequate collaboration between all key stakeholders, including the government and the industries.

ACS Shri Sahu State Government understand the priorities of the investors in the State and give assurance to all necessary support for your investments, aligned to the State’s vision of a‘ Circularity’ led growth. Together, we shall work towards creating an enabling ecosystem for sustainable industrialization of Odisha

ACS Shri Sahu said that rapid industrialization over the past two centuries with accelerated extraction and consumption of natural resources, leading to unprecedented ecological challenges.

ACS Shri Sahu said Odisha generates about 100 million tons of waste ranging from industrial wastes like fly ash, slag, and gypsum to urban waste like plastic, waste electronic goods, municipal waste, battery and waste tyres and many more.

The Circular Economy or Waste to Wealth projects not only becomes soft on environment, but also preserves natural resources that otherwise would have to be consume to make products.

Dr.K Murugesan, Member Secretary OSPCB presented the points for deliberations by the Stakeholders.

Dr.Murugesan elaborated on Circular Economy or Waste to Wealth for the information of the participants.

ACS Shri Sahu said therefore, transitioning to a ‘Circular Economy’ has become imperative, not just to protect the planet for our future generations, but also to strengthen our economy and make it competitive in global markets. ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ principles have become necessities for sustenance of our economy, and need to be scientifically inducted into our ways of lives.

Odisha, being the industrial powerhouse of eastern India, is committed towards a gradual transition from a linear to a Circular Economy.

Our transition to a circular economy model of growth would ensure that challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution are addressed, while safeguarding the necessary economic growth in the State, said ACS Shri Sahu.
