Bhubaneswar: Amid protests by opposition BJD and Congress members, Speaker Surama Padhy today adjourned State Legislative Assembly sine die, two business days ahead of its schedule.
The first session of the 17th Assembly began on July 22 and the session was supposed to conclude on September 13 with an interval from August 1 to 19.
The House transacted business for 25 days in its first session.
The newly-elected BJP Government presented its maiden Budget in the House on July 25 and Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who is also the Finance Minister, presented the Appropriation Bill yesterday. As there is no other official business before the House to transit, the Assembly was adjourned sine-die.
During the session, the House deliberated on 19 adjournment motions while the Ministers gave their replies to as many 4921 unstarred questions, discussion held on 21 demand for grants and six reports of the CAG for the year ending March 2022 were also tabled in the Assembly.
This evening, the opposition members were protesting the adoption of a Censure Motion against two BJD MLAs Dhruba Sahoo and Braja Pradhan and Congress legislator Taraprasad Bahinipati for allegedly showing disrespect toward the Speaker during the session.
The Speaker has sent the matter to the Ethics Committee of the Assembly after two women BJP members submitted a petition alleging that the trio used unparliamentary words against the Speaker and disrupted House proceedings.
