Bhubaneswar: Shree Mahakaleshwar has given darshan to devotees on Lord Jagannatha Vesha on the occasion of world-famous Rath Jatra.
Shree Mahakaleshwar decked up to resemble Shree Jagannatha and gave darshan to his devotees at Ujjain today. The devotees are also feeling blessed after having Darshan of Lord Shiva in such a rare Vesha since the bhasm aarti, the first ritual conducted everyday at the temple.
According to Hindu mythology, the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain is built by Lord Brahma.
Located in the old city of Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Mahakaleshwar Temple is one of the most revered and 12 Jyotirlingas in India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and is also one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas in India.
As per the records, the temple’s Mahakal Lingam is believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested), and that the idol of Mahakaleshwar faces south, which is unlike all the other Jyotirlingas in the country. It’s a popular Hindu pilgrimage site, where the Bhasma-Aarti lures tons of devotees from across the country.
Mahakaleshwar, which means the Lord of Time, refers to Lord Shiva, the one among the trinity of Hinduism, i.e., Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara, wherein Lord Shiva is also known as Maheshwara. This is the temple where Mahakal, Lord Shiva is worshipped, the reason why it’s also known as the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga.
If legends are to go by, Sati, wife of Lord Shiva, walked into the fire to protest against her father, King Daksha, who objected to her marriage with Lord Shiva. This made Lord Shiva furious, and this is when he performed Tandav, the Dance of Death, after which he was known as the Mahakal, or the one who is mightier and ahead of time itself.
According to another legend, the demon Dushan, attacked our Shaiva bhakts, then Lord Shiva tore the earth in half in a fit of rage, and this is when he manifested as Mahakaleshwar.
