Jharsuguda: Governing Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate Deepali Das today filed her nomination paper as a party candidate for the by-election to Jharsuguda assembly segment scheduled to be held on May 10.
Slain Minister Naba Kisore Das’s daughter, Deepali went to the Jharsuguda Sub-Collector’s office in a grand procession and submitted her nomination papers for the by-poll.
This by-poll is being held following assassination of her father Naba Kishore Das on 29 January, 2023.
Senior leaders and Ministers accompanied her during filing of nomination. The senior leaders included Prasanna Acharya, Debi Prasad Mishra, Pratap Jena, Snehangini Chhuria, Rita Sahu and Sarada Nayak.
Before proceeding in the procession, Deepali sought blessings of Goddess Pataneswari. Earlier on April 15, Deepali had received the party ticket from BJD President and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
“I will go to the people with the issue of development, ” she said, adding, “I will work under the guidance of the Chief Minister for the uplift and advancement of the women in the state.”
Prior to Deepali, BJP candidate Tankadhar Tripathy and Congress candidate Tarun Pandey have filed their nomination papers for the by-election. All the three candidates of the major political parties are debutants in the by-poll.
The Jharsuguda by-poll is considered politically significant as it may be the last electoral; tussle among parties before the next general elections for Lok Sabha and State Assembly scheduled to be held in 2024.
Meanwhile, all the candidates have already started their campaigning for the 10 May by-poll despite scorching heat wave prevailing in Odisha’s industrial town of Jharsuguda.
While 20 April is the last date of filing nomination, the papers will be scrutinized next day and the last date of withdrawal of candidature is 24 April. Counting of votes to be held on 13 May, the a ECI notification said.
