Bhubaneswar: After being elected as Mayor of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), senior BJD leader Subash Singh resigned from the membership of Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
Mr.Singh sought the advice of the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha on the legal implications of this. He recently met the Vice President and the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, M Venkaiah Naidu, and took his advice.
After receiving a written reply from the Parliament, Mr.Singh tendered his resignation from the Rajya Sabha today.
“Consequent upon my election as Mayor of CMC on March 26, 2022, I do hereby submit my resignation under Rule 213 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) from the membership of Council of States and I request you to accept the same with immediate effect,” Mr.Singh said in his resignation letter.
He also thanked the RS Chairman for his support and cooperation during his tenure as a member of the Upper House.
During his two-year tenure in RS, Mr.Singh raised several important issues of the State in the House.
Speaking to media persons here, the CMC Mayor said he cannot stay in two constitutional positions at one time. So, he resigned from the Rajya Sabha. He will continue to work for the development of Cuttack city.
“From the day I have elected as Mayor of Cuttack, I have started working for the city. My first and top most priority is to complete the ongoing drainage works being executed from JICA funding,” he said.
Mr.Singh was elected to the Upper House of Parliament on 3 April, 2020 from the BJD ticket.
