Sanjeeb Panda, Transport Commissioner said that “Road Accident Deaths decline by 17 Percent after Amended MV Act came into force.
Mr.Panda said that the amended MV Act came into force from 1 September, 2019.
During the those four months, the numbers deaths due to road accidents came down from 1856 in September-December 2018 to 1541 in September-Decemebr 2019 in Odisha.
The number deaths declined by 315 in terms numbers and 17 Percent less in those four months of 2019 comparing the same four months of 2018.
The deaths due to road accidents were a major concern in Odisha, as the it was increasing every year.
The death due to road accidents increased by 9.5 Percent in 2015, 3.7 PC in 2016, 7.3 PC in 2017 and 11PC in 2018, said Transport Commissioner.
Even during first eight months of 2019 the fatalities increased by 9.6PC . The trend got reversed from September onwards and the fatalities decreased by 12PC in September, 18.7 PC in October, 6.6PC in November and 26.9 PC in December 2019.
On year to year basis there was marginal 0.3PC increase in fatalities in 2019 comparing to 2018. There were 5333 fatalities in 2019, comparing to 5315 fatalities in 2018.
Boudh, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Deogarh, Malkangiri, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Sundargarh districts have reported more than 10 PC increase in fatalities.
Where as Angul, Nayagarh, Gajapati, Sambalpur, Nuapara, Bargarh, Cuttack districts have reported more than 10 PC decrease in fatalities.
At least 11064 accidents cases were reported in 2019, which came down by 1.8PC comparing to 11262 cases reported in 2018.
During the period from September to December, the Police has booked more than 10,000 drunken driving cases and arrested the drivers.
The RTOs have also booked about 100 cases of drunken driving in four months. As per the amended MV Act, the penalty for drunken driving is fine of Rs 10.000 or imprisonment upto six months or both.
The Driving License is also suspended for three months.
Transport Department is in the process of providing 200 more Breath Analysers to Police Department for strengthening the drive against drunken driving
